About the Role

NWRH now has multiple exciting opportunities available for adaptable Mental Health Professionals to join our teams across North and West Queensland on a full-time basis. Suitable candidates can opt to be based in either Mount Isa, Doomadgee, Mornington Island, Normanton or Longreach, with opportunities currently available in each location.

Reporting to the Team Leader Mental Health, your primary responsibility will to plan, deliver and evaluate discipline specific clinical services and educational activities within your relevant community, in accordance with organisational and program funding guidelines. This will be achieved by:

  • Providing individuals with information on vocational, relationship, social and educational concerns;
  • Working with clients to identify and define their emotional difficulties through therapies such as cognitive behaviour therapy, interpersonal therapy and other talking therapies;
  • Investigating, assessing and providing treatment/counselling to foster optimal personal, social, educational and occupational adjustment and development;
  • Assessing the social needs of individuals, families and groups, to assist and empower people to develop and use the skills and resources needed to resolve social and other problems; and
  • Assisting health and community groups to improve the health of individuals and the community by raising awareness of healthy lifestyles, disease and disability, and other health-related difficulties.

Who are we looking for?

NWRH is seeking professional, culturally sensitive and tenacious mental health professionals with the ability to work independently and autonomously.

Suitable candidates would include:

  • AHPRA Registered Psychologists,
  • AASW Accredited Mental Health Social Workers,
  • Experienced Mental Health Occupational Therapists; or
  • Registered Nurses with mental health specialisation & experience.

It is integral to the role that candidates have significant experience in providing high-quality discipline-specific assessment, prevention, treatment and intervention to achieve maximal outcomes, as well as demonstrated one-to-one counselling experience.

In this generalist role, you will be working with a broad range of clients including both children and adults, as such your high-level interpersonal, cross-cultural communication and negotiation skills will be crucial to your success in establishing respectful and trusting relationships with individuals, teams, NWRH staff and the community at large.

Knowledge of, or the motivation and ability to gain knowledge of, Primary Health Care principles and difficulties in rural and remote communities will be required, including the willingness to undertake further study if necessary.

While not mandatory, candidates with additional experience working for not-for-profits and/or experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds will be highly regarded.

Please note: Fortnightly travel to communities within your catchment area will be required, as such you must be comfortable with travelling by light aircraft or road and possess a current, unrestricted Australian Driver's Licence. Any travel expenses incurred during these periods will be reimbursed.
